What Euro 6 emissions legislation means for MINI vehicles – and the benefits for MINI drivers as well as the environment.
What is RDE2?
RDE2 is the second stage of the stringent Real Driving Emissions testing and monitoring measures.
These tests were introduced by the EU to complement the World harmonised Light vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) in 2017 - with the aim of making cars more environmentally friendly by limiting, in particular, their nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.
The RDE test uses specific equipment installed on the vehicle to check the emissions of pollutants - not just in the lab, but also out on real roads under various conditions, including:
- Different altitudes and temperatures
- Up- and down-hill driving
- Urban/rural roads and motorways at varying speeds
What is the difference between Euro 6, Euro 6d and Euro 6d-TEMP?
Euro 6 legislation was introduced by the EU in 2015 to limit exhaust emissions by setting restrictions on how much pollutant gases may be emitted per kilometre by road vehicles. It has made a considerable impact, but the tests came under some scrutiny, and so they have been updated to offer an even clearer picture of real-world/real-road emission levels. Under Euro 6, the requirements for petrol and diesel vehicles differ as they each produce different levels of pollutants.
Since September 2019, every type of new car that is newly registered must fulfill the so called EU6d-TEMP standard. This means every car must have gone through a road test to have its emission levels monitored. The limits are higher than those in the laboratory tests, and cover primarily carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxide (NOx), and particulate matter (PM).

The EU exhaust emissions standard defines the valid limits for exhaust emissions such as nitrogen oxides and particulate matter within the EU. The limits vary according to engine and type of vehicle.
Under RDE testing, NOx limit values have now been adjusted:
- from approx. 128 mg/km to 80 mg/km for diesel vehicles
- from approx. 96 mg/km to 60 mg/km for petrol-driven vehicles
Vehicles that were approved under the previous standards (Euro 6d-TEMP) will have to be re-tested and, if necessary, refitted accordingly in order to be sold from January 2021. From January 2021, all new cars have to pass the real-world Euro 6d emissions test, with lower limits, effectively equalling laboratory test levels. In July 2020, MINI optimised all MINI Countryman models to make them Euro 6d-TEMP-compliant. All other MINI models are to follow suit.
WHAT DO EURO 6D AND EURO 6D-TEMP MEAN FOR YOU AS A MINI DRIVER?
MINI (BMW Group) has been undergoing a fundamental process of transformation in which sustainability and modern mobility plays an especially vital and important role.
As of June 2019, all newly produced BMW and MINI models have fulfilled Euro 6d-TEMP criteria.
More specifically, all MINI petrol-engine variants of the MINI 3-door Hatch, MINI 5-door Hatch and MINI Convertible, as well as the MINI Clubman and MINI Countryman, have been fitted with a particulate filter and meet the requirements of the Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standards.
This confirms how MINI consistently continues optimise the level of emissions in its current models. The diesel-engine variants of the MINI Clubman and MINI Countryman have met the Euro 6d-TEMP standard since March 2018.
Simply put, our entire range is already better for the environment – and your pocket – as in some cities/regions, drivers of cars that fail to meet EU6 emission standards will have to pay an extra charge to drive through Low Emissions Zones.
RDE Level 2 will be required, as of January 2021, and BMW/MINI are already working on the transition to meet the new test procedure for all upcoming models. We are preparing our product portfolio step-by-step with new engine versions or technical revisions. This will enable us to achieve complete ongoing WLTP conformity for the entire range.
